Well Woman Exams Q & A

What is a well-woman exam?

Well-woman exams are annual assessments of your overall health, including gynecological health and wellness. Your appointment includes screening, a health evaluation, education, counseling, and treatment when necessary. Routine well-woman exams help Dr. Watson detect health complications before they become serious.

Which well-woman services are available?

During well-woman exams with Dr. Watson and his team, you receive:

  • Annual health exams
  • Pelvic and breast exams
  • Pap smear and HPV testing
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment
  • Vaccinations
  • Osteoporosis prevention and treatment
  • Menopause and perimenopause assessment and treatment
  • Treatment for gynecological conditions

Dr. Watson handles teen gynecological visits with compassion and care. Teen services include their first exam, irregular period assessments, pregnancy and STD prevention, education, and optional HPV vaccines.

What should I expect during my appointment?

When you arrive at the office of James A. Watson, MD, you’re greeted by the warm, welcoming staff. Your provider checks your weight, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. Dr. Watson reviews your medical history and asks about symptoms you may have.

He completes a physical exam, including a pelvic exam and possibly a Pap test to screen for signs of cervical cancer. While you relax in a comfortable chair, he inserts a speculum into your vagina to examine reproductive organs and take tissue samples when necessary.

Dr. Watson might recommend blood tests, a urine test, hysteroscopy, ultrasound, or other diagnostic imaging procedures to detect or rule out women’s health concerns.

Will I require treatment?

Dr. Watson and his team offer birth control, immunizations, and treatment for the following conditions:

  • Heavy uterine bleeding or irregular periods
  • Infertility
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Abnormal Pap smears or cervical cancer
  • Urinary incontinence and other symptoms of menopause
  • Endometriosis
  • STDs
  • Hormone imbalance

Your treatment might include medications, hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle changes, noninvasive procedures, or minimally invasive gynecological procedures.

How often should I schedule a well-woman exam?

As a general rule, schedule a well-woman exam once yearly, or whenever you experience symptoms of a women’s health problem, become pregnant, or have questions and concerns about your health. Dr. Watson might recommend more frequent OB/GYN visits if you have a gynecological condition.
